Victorian Era - 19th Century Reenactment
1839 - The world is a quickly changing one. Young Queen Victoria on the throne, with Prince Albert about to join her side, represents the United Kingdom and the British Empire undergoing a new start with reform, industrialization, and revolution threatening to upset the order of society. Ironically a time called the Pax Britannica, around the world, the British army clashes with enemies in Asia, Africa, and on the seas as the empire haphazardly expands its reach. At home, railroads are linking cities, scientific marvels are transforming the way people understand the world, while a widening gulf between the rich and poor accelerates demands for change.
The Great War - 20th Century Reenactment
The First World War was known, for all its devastating sacrifice, as the "War to End All Wars" - an idea which sadly proved to be untrue. World War One transformed the globe, shattering the old system that had governed European affairs (and by extension, the world). A "total" war, all of society was mobilized and directed to the war effort between 1914 and 1918. Sussex in England, was no exception. In the muddy trenches of France and Flanders, the icy mountain battlefields and rivers of Italy, or the mosquito-infested bogs and deserts of the Middle East, the British soldier, alongside French, American, Italian, Belgian, and Russian allies, battled the Central Powers of Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Turkey to decide whether democracy or authoritarianism would triumph. The Society interprets the 2nd Battalion, The Royal Sussex Regiment as well as Voluntary Aid Detachments to showcase the role both men and women played during the First World War.
