The Royal Sussex Band

The Royal Sussex Regimental Society decided, in mid 2009, to establish a recreation of the band of the regiment as it was during the 1880's.  As such, it was established to be the only known British Victorian band in existence within the eastern United States.  The band will accompany the regiment on parades, at our living history events, special ceremonies, and possibly on occasion as a stand-alone entity.

If you are interested in volunteering with the Royal Sussex as an authentic 19th Century military bandsman, please contact us without delay.

What inspires more pride in one's unit than a brilliant uniform?  Fortunately, the bandsmen's uniform is not only attractive, but relatively simple as well.  All bandsmen were trained soldiers first and foremost, and the uniform reflects that.  We thank the Royal Sussex Living History Group in the United Kingdom for the use of the photograph of the regiment's band on home service ca. 1880's.

The bandsmen will wear their foreign service frocks of scarlet wool in the same pattern as the soldiers, with the addition of laced shoulder wings.  In all other appointments, their uniform is the same as the soldiers' and specified in the Society's "Soldier's Manual".
