For the Grenadier Company, 35th Regiment of Foot
Regimental Coat - A full-length red wool coat, faced orange, lined
white, with laced shoulder wings and lace around the buttonholes.
Bearskin Hat - Made of black bear fur, the hat is very distinctive,
worn by grenadiers, fusiliers, and musicians. The rear has a red wool
backing and should have a pewter flaming grenade device in the rear.
Pioneers wore a smaller version with a different front plate.
Cocked Hat - Heavy black wool felt with white worsted
wool trim and a black cockade. Hat must also have a white ostrich feather,
the "Roussillon Plume." Occasionally, the cocked hat was worn by the
grenadiers, it is an acceptable option until a proper bearskin can be
acquired.
Shirt - Basic, plain white linen shirt. A cotton
shirt is good to have as a back-up.
White Waistcoat - Wool for winter wear, linen for
summer wear.
White Breeches - Wool for winter wear, linen for
summer wear.
Neckstock - Black linen or horsehair with clasps.
Dress occasions ordered black velvet edged with red.
White Stockings - Heavy cotton or wool. Black
leather garters hold them up, just below the knee.
Shoes - Period shoes with brass buckles. Privates
generally had shoes with the rough side out.
Gaiters - Black half-gaiters for the summer, full
gaiters for the winter.
Knapsack - Double-strap two pouch canvas knapsack
covered with white goatskin.
Haversack - Osnaburg or linen, used to carry food
rations. Should be marked GR with a broad arrow.
Cartridge Pouch - 29 hole design on a white leather
strap. Should have a brass grenade pouch badge.
Whisk & Pick - For immediate servicing of a soldier's
musket, attached to cartridge pouch strap.
Double-Frog Shoulder Belt - White leather, to carry
bayonet and sword.
Sword - The brass British "Model 1742" hanger with a leather scabbard.
Canteen - Tin or, if stainless steel, covered in
white wool.
Wig - Natural hair color, grenadiers wore their wigs
with the queue (ponytail part) tucked up into the hat. White wigs for
dress occasions and parades.
Musket - 1st Model Brown Besses recommended, 2nd Models also acceptable.
Loyalist Arms and Pedersoli 1st and 2nd Model Brown Besses are good,
but no wooden ram-rods. Must have a fitting bayonet, white leather
sling, hammerstall, and flashguard.
Matchcase - Left-over relic from the grenadiers' grenade-throwing
days, a brass decoration which was designed to hold a burning slow-match
on the cartridge box strap.
Forage Cap - Made from old coats, red wool, faced with orange, for
fatigue duty and sleeping.
